Jnana — The sole means to liberation

In the course of the Vijaya Yatra of 2012-13, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji arrived at the picturesque Vedapuri Ashram in Theni on May 31, 2012. In His Anugraha Bhashanam, the Jagadguru points out the flaws in the common and age-old mis-interpretations of Vedanta, explains their correct interpretations and the way to approach the study of Vedanta.

Specifically, the Jagadguru addressed the common accusation that Vedanta gives no place for Upasana and the performance of Karma. The Jagadguru emphasized that Jnana (knowledge of the self) alone can burn all our Karmas and Jnana can be secured only by approaching a Guru.

  • An ideal disciple will indeed act as per the Guru’s instructions and not give place to thoughts as “Is it possible for me to do as he says? Shall I try something else?” If we follow our Guru’s instructions, it does not mean that we are unintelligent. It only implies that we have surrendered for our own good to a power superior to us.
